THE Humber Bridge Half marathon was established by the rotary club of Hull in 1998, when it was decided to stage a high profile race incorporating the magnificent setting of the humber bridge.
The first official race was held 12 months later, and has grown to become the biggest Rotary fundraising event in Hull and the East Riding, raising funds for charities and organisations on both sides of the river. The event is also supported by our friends from the Rotary Club of Barton Upon Humber.
A total of 1,261 runners competed in the first race, with 1000s of additional runners since. The race has previously been named by Runner’s World as one of the top 50 road races in the UK.
Race days have been improved every year for runners and spectators and we are incredibly proud of how the event has grown.
Vitally for us, this is a not-for-profit event, with all money raised after the deductions of necessary expenses donated to charity, in 2017, we gave over £40,000 to good causes, which doesn’t include any fundraising generated by individual runners themselves. In our race history we have donated over £600,000 to charities and community groups.
Charities supported include:
HEY Smile Foundation; Marie Curie Cancer Care; Dove House Hospice; St Andrews Hospice; The Daisy Appeal; Special Olympics Swimming Galal; Faith in Education; When You Wish Upon a Star; Yorkshire Air Ambulance; Downright Special; St John Ambulance; Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen; Sea Cadets; Haiti Appeal; Hull Floods Appeal; Cash for Kids; Vision Aid; Arthritis Care; Charities of Rotary Clubs of Hull and Barton upon Humber; Shelter boxes; MENCAP; Teenage Cancer Trust; Carer’s Trust; Butterflies Memory Loss Support Group; Mind; the Brain Tumour Charity and many more.
